Concordia Place & Concordia Day
In 1981, Concordia Church founded what is today Concordia Place out of its belief that the vitality of the urban church is rooted in its outreach to the community through education and service. Just days after The Reverend Nicholas J. Zook started as pastor of Concordia Church three single mothers approached him asking for help with after school care for their children. It would have been easy to say, “no.”
Like many urban churches at that time, Concordia Lutheran Church was struggling financially and facing closure. The families were not members of the church and had very little means. However, the church focused beyond its walls to the needs of the larger community and said “YES” to create an after-school program that today is Concordia Place. Learn more about Concordia Place, a thriving community ministry located in North Center and Avondale, and its sister mission, Concordia Day, which launched in August 2016.
Concordia Faith Stories
Join us in a new series of faith stories, using the Story Corps app, where we record faith stories from Concordia’s community members. Story Corps is unique in that every story is saved in the Library of Congress. This not only adds historical value for generations to come, but it also adds immense value for the history of our Chicago Christian community and Concordia Lutheran Church members.
Jennifer, originally from Texas, felt called at an early age towards missionary work. After seven years in Chicago, Jennifer, Kevin and their son Bear (Age 1) have found a home in the Avondale neighborhood. In her story, Jennifer shares her journey and her calling. Listen to the story here.

Concordia Lutheran Church child care services are offered at both of our church locations.
Services focus on God’s love and grace for all people. When you first come to Concordia Lutheran Church, you will receive an outline of the day’s worship service which includes a children’s message, assigned readings from the Bible, community prayers, a message from the Pastor, and Holy Communion.
While the 8:30 a.m. service is spoken, the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service includes uplifting music, which often involves guest musicians and congregational singing. Services last approximately one hour. If you are new to the community, we invite all new parishioners to share in a Sunday service with us at one of our Concordia Church locations in Chicago.
We invite all who are baptized to receive Holy Communion. Gluten-free hosts are available. Anyone unable to come to the altar should inform the usher and Communion will be brought to you at your seat.
